15-CD collection traces the bandâs return to the road The Grateful Dead announced a massive box set titled ‘June 1976.’ They’ve also shared a nine-minute “Friend of the Devil.” The Grateful Dead announced a massive box set titled June 1976 on Thursday. Theyâve also shared a nine-minute version of âFriend of the Devil,â recorded live at New Yorkâs Beacon Theatre. Produced by Dead archivist David Lemieux, the 15-CD set contains complete performances from June 1976: Boston Music Hall (June 10th and 11th), the Beacon Theatre (June 14th and 15th) and an evening at New Jerseyâs Capitol Theatre (June 19th). Author Jesse Jarnow wrote the liner notes. June of 1976 marks a pivotal time in Dead history â the band returned to the road after a break in touring, in 1974. The Dead transitioned from arenas to theaters, recording crisp, intimate shows. âGone was the massive, financially draining, and physically exhausting Wall of Sound PA system,â Lemieux tells Rolling Stone. âThe stadiums and hockey arenas were replaced by beautiful, small theaters, Mickey Hart was back in the band after a five-year sabbatical, and the repertoire had changed quite a bit.â Several songs made their debut on the set list, while some tracks were resurrected from the past: âSt. Stephenâ and âCosmic Charlieâ from 1969âs Aoxomoxoa and âFriend of the Devilâ from American Beauty â an album that turns 50 in November. Lemieux describes this version of âFriend of the Devilâ â which features Donna Godchaux on backing vocals â as âa beautifully slowed-down, ballad arrangement, which would be the form of the song for the next 20 years.â June 1976 is currently available for preorder. It will be limited to 12,000 individually numbered copies; digital download is also available. Dead & Company â the supergroup comprised of the Deadâs Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann alongside John Mayer â recently announced a North American summer tour. The live set captures Hendrix’s historic pair of 1970 New Year’s Day concerts In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Jimi Hendrix live album Band of Gypsys will be reissued on vinyl next month. Released in March 1970, Band of Gypsys was recorded by legendary engineer Wally Heider and captures Hendrixâs two historic performances at New Yorkâs Fillmore East on New Yearâs Day that same year. It features powerful fan favorites like âWho Knowsâ, âMachine Gunâ, and âMessage to Loveâ. Band of Gypsys marked the first effort done without his original band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. And compared to the rock iconâs first three studio albums, including the seminal Electric Ladyland, this live collection saw Hendrix push himself further in terms of collaboration and the fusing of blues, funk, and rock. âThis is more than the commemoration of an anniversary,â Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix, noted in a statement, âthat, of course, is something momentous, but it is also the celebration of a cathartic event in Jimiâs life⊠a sort of changing of the guards.â âHe demonstrated that there was no limit to his musical landscape,â she added. âIt was broad and beautiful, and like the leader of a true band of gypsies, Jimi could go anywhere on the spectrum of genres and be at home there musically! This is our way of celebrating that part of Jimiâs journey.â The forthcoming reissue was made by mastering the original analog stereo tapes. It will be available on 180-gram audiophile black vinyl, as well as limited-edition cream, red, yellow, and green swirl vinyl. Each will come paired with a replica concert poster and an eight-page booklet brimming with rare live photos and an essay penned by John McDermott. The Band of Gypsys vinyl reissue is officially out March 27th and pre-orders have already begun. To dig further into Hendrixâs classic catalog, make sure to tune into the second season of The Opus, which is dedicated to 1968âs Electric Ladyland.
